The Salary Negotiation Check List for Women (Because you're worth it)
I have hired a few people in my career – some men and some women. I don’t want to generalize, but alas I can.
Almost always, a man will counter the offer, it may be a big ticket item or a small one but there will be some back and forth. By the end of the negotiation the dollar buffer I put in place usually disappears. But when it comes to hiring a woman, even those who say they need a weekend to think about it, usually accept without negotiating. Times have changed a little and some women reading this are probably thinking that they always negotiate but ask any HR manager and they will confirm that most women accept an offer without asking for more.
The problem with not negotiating is that it’s impossible to climb up from the salary you start with. Raises are 3-5% maximum in most companies; so if your starting salary isn’t what you want it to be, you’ll always be behind and the only way to catch up will be to find a job in another company, where you’ll have to negotiate. It's a vicious cycle.
